You don’t look like you need help – on the outside.
Each time someone walks up behind you, the vice in your chest turns again. Your heart beats so hard it threatens to bruise your ribs. You know it’s only a matter of time until you lose control.
Each “how are you doing?” is like tearing open a scar. They want to know the gritty details of what happened, and each time is like reliving what happened.
You want to move on already!
Hands claw at you in your dreams. It’s happening again! You rocket out of bed, fighting off invisible attackers. What’s worse is the look of worry on your spouse’s face.
Trauma requires a particular approach.
Coping with trauma requires developing a specific positive strategy. Helping someone make that recovery requires a therapist with extensive training to treat those memories, and not all therapists have put in the hours needed.
My training provides me with the tools to help individuals struggling with the effects of painful life events. Our work will be collaborative and designed to empower you, give you skills, and reduce your anxiety. Healing from trauma takes time, but you can recover with the right tools and hard work.
Sessions are focused on your goals as well as learning and using new skills like challenging negative thoughts, learning how PTSD lies to you, how it changes your behavior, and coming up with a plan to get back into the world safely. We will use a highly effective therapy called Evidence-Based Practice, such as EMDR, Cognitive Processing Therapy, or Prolonged Exposure. You’ll track your symptoms as we go to see for yourself how you’re responding to the therapy.
We’ll make the ‘present’ more enjoyable.
My clients tell me that I’m warm, empathetic, and above all, a safe person with whom to discuss how they feel. We will take an inventory of what you’re doing that’s already working and build on it.
You’ll learn new skills to prevent panic and anxiety. I’ll teach you how to use mindfulness, thought challenging, exposure, and ways to “rewire” your brain for health. I’ll teach you how to focus your mind on the present, becoming aware of your safety through focusing on one of your senses. Your brain will start to slow those anxious thoughts and feel safer through our work.
Therapy can be your secret weapon in kicking PTSD to the curb.
