FAQ

Where are you located?

Better question is…where am I NOT located?

My practice is 100% virtual, serving all of Illinois. All the therapeutic modalities I practice have been shown to be as effective online as they are in person. You’ll receive a link to our session when you schedule an appointment. You’ll also get an email reminder about our appointment.

What ages do you work with?
18 years old+.
What will sessions look like?

We will spend the first several sessions exploring what matters to you. I’m interested in learning what you’ve tried already, what has worked, what hasn’t worked, learning who you are as a person, and building trust for the work that we’re doing.

Most of my clients eventually transition to one of the several “Evidence-Based Therapies” I offer.

What are Evidence-Based Therapies?

EBPs are highly effective at reducing symptoms in as short a time frame as possible. They are specific approaches to working with problems (such as trauma) and empower you to build skills quickly to get back to the life you love.

I have extensive training in:

Cognitive Processing Therapy

EMDR

Prolonged Exposure

Written Exposure Therapy

Emotionally Focused Therapy (for couples and individuals)

What happens after an EBP ends? Do you kick me out?

It’s up to you. Many clients complete the work they set out to do and successfully conclude therapy. Other clients may prefer to remain in therapy after completing an EBP. Supportive counseling is a valuable resource for many people, and I’m happy to work with you in a supportive capacity.

How long are sessions?
Depending on the kind of treatment we decide fits best based on your specific symptoms, sessions are generally 53 minutes long. I have found most people benefit from weekly appointments. We would find a day and time that works for you, and it will become your “time slot.”
How long will I be in therapy?

Most people find that they can effectively reduce their symptoms in 4-6 months. Of course, this can vary greatly based on how frequently we’re meeting, what sort of work we’re doing, and various other factors. But for the most part, therapy tends to be fairly short-medium term.

What is your cancellation policy?
Stuff comes up. I get it. I ask for 24 hours’ notice, or you will be charged the full session fee.
Are you LGBTQ+ friendly?
Of course! I am a staunch ally. All people are welcome here.
What is the best city in the world, and why is it Chicago?
So many reasons! If we ignore the world-class theatres, music, gorgeous beachfront, culture, sports, and architecture, we’d still be left with genuinely good and kind-hearted people. People who aren’t afraid to work and who value progress. I absolutely adore this city and am proud to call Chicago home!
What do you do in your free time?
I love to bike ride, am an avid reader, lounge in my hammock, and visit with friends and family. I also love to play board games and go to live theatre. PLEASE talk books and theatre to me!
You mention that you were in an Oscar-winning documentary. What's that story?
I worked on the National Veterans Crisis Hotline in upstate New York for several years. A documentary crew came and filmed our activities to shed light on the mental health crisis impacting veterans, who are taking their lives at the rate of 22/day. I was filmed as a part of that process. The sound guy even let me hold the “boom mic” to see how quickly my arms would get tired. Interestingly, boom mics are not as heavy as they look.
I googled your name and saw you're a part of "The Nerd Therapy Podcast." What the what?

Lol, yep. I’m a big nerd and always have been. I love board gaming, sci-fi and fantasy novels, geeky conventions, etc., and as a side hobby, I am a co-host of a podcast where a colleague and I explore mental health through the lens of geek culture. I even interviewed the incredible Doug Jones (Star Trek, Shape of Water, Hellboy, Crimson Peak, etc.). You can check out the podcast for free mental health musings of the geekiest sort.
